Description
An antiscalant is a pretreatment injected into the feedwater before the feedwater enters the RO membranes. Its presence delays the reaction between calcium magnesium and bicarbonate. This results is scale not forming as the water is being purified by the RO. As the duration of the water in the membrane system is relatively short during the treatment, scale formation is prevented.
Membrane Antiscalants & Antifoulants
RO systems create salt concentrated water streams that could produce scale or fouling. SUEZ’s RO membrane antiscalants are pretreatment programs designed to eliminate scale and reduce fouling in membranes systems, regardless of the feedwater source.
While treatment with an ordinary antiscalants does provide some improvement, the use of SUEZ’s patented chemistry maximizes efficacy against a broad range of scale-forming substances and keeps fouling material in suspension.
What is an Antiscalant?
An antiscalant is a pretreatment that gets injected into the feedwater that flows through the RO membrane, preventing the membrane from scaling. RO membrane scaling occurs when particles accumulate on a membrane, causing the membrane’s pores to plug.
Some common membrane foulants and Scalants include calcium carbonate, calcium sulfate, barium sulfate, strontium sulfate, calcium fluoride, iron, colloidal material, silica and other organic contaminants.
SUEZ suggests adding a RO membrane antiscalant to your pretreatment program to improve efficacy again the broad range of scale-forming substances and to keep fouling material in suspension.
Hypersperse* Antiscalants/Antifoulants
The Hypersperse pretreatment program is designed to significantly reduce scale formation and fouling in membrane systems. The antiscalants are suitable and effectively used in a range of feedwater sources, including brackish, waste and seawater.
The use of SUEZ’s chemistries improves efficacy against a broad range of scale-forming substances and keeps fouling material in suspension. Common foulants and scalants include calcium carbonate, calcium sulfate, barium sulfate, strontium sulfate, calcium fluoride, iron, colloidal material, silica and other organic contaminants.
Hypersperse Antiscalants/Antifoulants Features & Benefits
- Effectively control scales including silica, calcium carbonate, calcium sulfate, barium sulfate, and strontium sulfate
- Compatible with the leading reverse osmosis (RO) and nanofiltration (NF) membranes
- Maintain cleaner membrane surfaces by dispersing particulate foulants
- RO systems can be run at higher recovery rates, which translates to lower operating costs
- Products available with multiple global regulatory approvals
- Non-Phosphorus products available
- Effective over a wide pH range
Typical Antiscalant Dosing
The typical antiscalant dosing range is between 0.5 and 4 mg/L. To determine the adequate dosage rate for your system, it is recommended that you use SUEZ’s Argo Analyzer* simulation software.
The Argo Analyzer is designed to provide guidance on the best choice of antiscalant chemicals for your RO plant and will provide the appropriate application dosage based on your specific water chemistry and system design.
